License a homemade mud motor?

I'm in the process of building a homemade 3.5h longtail. It's going to be on a 13.5' four rivers layout boat. I've talked to the license beauro and they said I should license the motor which is no big deal to me. But, they require water patrol to inspect it first. Is it worth it to drive quite a ways to have them inspect it and get it licensed? Or should i just run it and hope i don't get checked??? I'm new to the mud motor world so some advise would be appreciated.

scrap the 3.5 and make it at least a 6hp 
How stupid is that, requiring you to license a motor

i got the 3.5 for a stupidly low price so i got to give it a try, i happened to find a new 3.5 briggs on clearance for $75. Missouri requires any type of gas operated motor to be licensed. But im just wondering if i am really going to be checked for the sticker and if i am checked are they going to say anything?

I've never titled my weedwacker longtail, my 5 HP mud motor, my 2.8 HP mud motor or any of the homemade boats I've built over the years.
There used to be a license exemption for vessels operating on temporary flood waters but that has disappeared from the watercraft manual in recent years. So my logic was always that since I only used it during duck season and almost exclusively on CA's (temporary flood waters) I didn't need it. When ever I hunt permanent water I typically use my jon boat which is licensed or a kayak or layout without a motor although I'd be lying if I said I never ran it on permanent water.
I know there are a number of people who feel the same way and don't register their duck boats either. However, the water patrol is getting more and more sticky about it and they now show up at CA ramps from time to time during duck season. I don't know what the fine is but I'd rather not have to pay it, or worse yet have to pay it multiple times. I know I once said that I would never title and register any homebuilt craft, but the probability of getting caught seems to be getting greater each season. So once I get a new KARA built it and my 5 HP MM will get licensed.
I have dealt with the water patrol a few times in the past to get other boats and motors inspected and it ain't a big deal. They just make sure it is safe and run any numbers to make sure it ain't stolen. Of course theres no worry of stolen with a homebuilt. They will provide you with the proper documentation to take to the D.O.R.
So weather it is worth it or not is up to you, but the risk is there.

Hell, if you only got $75.00 in it I'd say screw it. If you get caught....just say, "it ain't mine, I found it on my way back in here, I was just gonna see if it ran". They won't write you a ticket, but they might take it, which will be less then what the ticket would have cost you.....so you're ahead on the deal.

This one is only 2.8 HP and it does just fine. That 3.5 will do fine too. Obviously you won't get the same performance as a 5 or 6 HP but anything beats paddling.

i'll leave early if i have to as long as i dont have to paddle , i just dont want to go threw the trouble of licensing it if i don't need to, i'll mainly be hunting on small rivers, and some privately owned lakes

I could be wrong but I seem to remember that the state of Missouri removed the requirement to license anything under 4HP. I'd re-check the REG'S "they said I should license the motor" is different from I MUST license the motor.

Nope, all gas motor regardless of size are required to be titled and registered. Electric trolling motors are the only motors exempt. And any boat that uses a motor of any type (even electric) must be titled and registered. I still think it's a crock that we have to register motors and trailers at all. Either way it's your call, you might get away with it a couple of times or you might get away with it for years. In any event, if you do license it you may as well license the boat too cause it won't make a bit of difference if the motor is legal if the boat ain't.

seems like the $10 is better than the hassle when your in a hurry to get out on the water, or to go home and sleep. Course I never registered a home made, take the receipt for the motor if you can to prove what you paid, I guess???
I picked up a flat back canoe, and wont register it, so no motor for it. My rotator cuffs need the work out anyway....But that 18hp evinrude would be a lot of fun on the back of it.

All joking aside.....I'll pay a forking ticket GLADLY, before I will register a motor that I only use on a CA.
Hell, Duck Creek still has boats......you see registration numbers on all of them??? Do you???
Piss on the Water Patrol in a CA making sure everyone is "legal" in a flooded corn field, in less then a foot of water. That's just your 1/8 sales tax money getting siphoned to something you NEVER voted for.....propping up other state agencies.
